WELCOME BACK to East2West Trending! This is Rosalyn, and wow, what a week it has been! I miss Sara and am sad we didn’t get to party on Halloween together so the feature image is us ready to take over the bar in DC!
Is Halloween actually over? I still don’t feel like it is with it being on Thursday and people in costumes the weekend before and after. I saw some great costumes this year in LA. I even liked my coworker’s idea of dressing up in a suit and wearing a piece of paper that says “I’m Sorry”, because get this-he was a formal apology!
On that note, no more apologies about healthcare.gov not working! What I’m surprised about is this:
This week, the Republicans have been ranked for the next presidency by the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza. All I can say to this is that I agree that Chris Christie would be a strong contender, but does he want to run for presidency is the real question. Also, I’m amazed at how there are already rankings when the election is still a few years away.
Looks like the Sara/Rosalyn ticket will need to get going asap! *Noted.
This week, I am so excited to tell you about a traveling improv show I saw this week. Eric Oren performs in Chicago, and this week, he came to IO West with the Mary Todd Lincoln Variety Hour. They were all so funny and so talented. If any of you readers are in Chicago or go to Chicago and want to see a show, you too can see them!
“Time Out Chicago” wrote about them here: http://www.timeoutchicago.com/arts-culture/comedy/16465786/5-comedy-shows-to-see-this-week
I love a good comedic performance! Speaking of comedians, DeRay Davis will be hosting the game show “Mind of A Man” that I mentioned in last week’s blog, and the official debut date will be January 8, 2014 . Stay tuned for who else will be on it!
There were so many costumes this week for Halloween, and I saw a lot of Miley Cyrus and surprisingly a lot of hot sauce bottles too. I have more of a sweet tooth so I enjoyed all the candy going around at my office, and I also really like this wrist candy:
The best part about these friendship bracelets is that Cruciani donates a portion of the proceeds to charity. Sara, I’ll be getting us one of these!
They are Beyonce approved!
So last week I mentioned Lyft and Sidecar in addition to Uber, and now I have all 3 of these apps. I took both a Lyft and a Sidecar for the first time this past week, and I have to say both were great experiences.
That being said, I looked up more transportation apps and found that there was actually a Dublin Web Summit for digital app inventors. The same site that says that Sara and I went to a sexy college really opened my eyes to the app world and what apps can do in other countries.
24sessions. Skype advice. Whether you need therapy, help making jam or advice on how to change a car tire, an online tutor rated by the community is on hand to help you.
Fonesense.com. Get paid three cents every time your phone rings by simply agreeing to have your ringtone replaced by the jingle of a well-known brand. So, instead of “ring ring,” you get, “Always Coca-Cola.” You get less money if your phone is not at full volume. In tests, users saved approx 5€ a month on their phone bills.
This week, CNN created a great way of sharing the inspiring stories of heroes. Everyday people changing the world often don’t get the attention that they deserve. This interactive story telling also shows you how you can help them. Check it out and vote for who you think should be the CNN Hero of the Year.
Thanks for reading this week, and don’t forget to read DC Sara’s update on the East Coast tomorrow!
Thanks as always to my favorite West coast P.I.C. and love, love, love the ‘formal apology’ costume. Here’s what we had in store from the week:
Our favorite love-to-hate whistle blower, Edward Snowden released his ‘manifesto’ calling for a global solution to address the issue of mass global surveillance. Perhaps the simplest yet most compelling message in Snowden’s manifesto was his statement that “Those who speak the truth are not committing a crime.” Washington however, disagrees. What do you think?

I’ve heard wonderful things about the traveling comedy show Rosalyn attended and would encourage everyone follow suit and see the talented Eric Oren and friends if you have the opportunity.
On a more festive note, let’s talk Halloween. A day filled with candy comas, scary movies, haunted attractions, costume parties and trick-or-treating. I am personally a big fan of Halloween as it’s much easier to convince people to watch horror flicks with me around a time that apparently warrants and encourages such activities. A few personal favorites include The Exorcist, The Storm of the Century, IT, and The Shining. Horror film lover? Check out the 2013 Horror film list here and catch up on any you might have missed!

Now we’ve got to hit on Halloween again because this is worth filling you in on. For the past 14 years the beautiful Heidi Klum has hosted a Halloween party and gone ALL out on her costume. I’m not talking dressing up as Robin Thicke instead of Miley here people, I’m talking professional makeup artists, you would never believe it was Heidi Klum even if she gave you her passport. Take a look:
Can you believe it!? The woman goes from age 40 to 95 in one day and she still looks fabulous. Check out the creation of her costume here: http://www.today.com/entertainment/heidi-klum-wins-halloween-again-stunning-old-woman-8C11511685
Below are a couple of other noteworthy gems to keep in mind for next year:
Love the 24sessions app! Maybe it can give me advice on how to retire by age 26. It’s only 6 months away but I feel like that’s plenty of time to make millions. Ok, but in all seriousness I have to stick with apps this week because I’ve got an almost obsession with picture apps. Of particular interest are the apps that allow you to create collages on the spot while still providing capabilities for fun filtering, framing and tweaking. I mean we all love picture apps right? How could you not, it takes elements of being a good photographer and translates them into easy, one ‘click’ tools for the everyday wannabe like me 🙂
