POLITICS

I can’t tell you how sad I was to hear about the death of Nelson Mandela. Being able to live in South Africa, ever so briefly and see and hear of the evolution he had caused was remarkable and truly awe inspiring. Nelson Mandela wasn’t just a ‘fighter,’ a fighter for human rights and his own, he was a strategic, and like other great leaders, a man who while living amidst chaos and discrimination had the foresight and genuine belief in the potential the world and people had to make things better. Thank you. Read more about his legacy here: http://www.aucegypt.edu/gapp/cairoreview/pages/articledetails.aspx?aid=69

Nelson Mandela

I also love some of the commentary after Mandela’s passing for our future generations to know what a powerful, impactful presence he was for the world…

ENTERTAINMENT

I LOVE THE HOLIDAYS! And who doesn’t, right? Whether it’s a break from your hectic work schedule, the tasty treats, or you really do just need some new slippers, I think we can all agree that one of the best parts about the holidays is the running of festive films. For those of you who are scoffing to yourself right now because you’d rather take Tom Hanks place in Cast Away then sit down and watch a holiday movie for 2.5 hours with your family, don’t lie to yourself. You loved National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Eight Crazy Nights. And this year, I was intrigued by an article that Entertainment Weekly came out with that serves a dual purpose of helping you with your holiday gift giving AND re-igniting that fun holiday flick fire – check out the article ‘Make Your Own Movie-Inspired Holiday Cards’ here.

FASHION

Soooo, I just have to report this week on some serious fashion faux pas. First off, no matter what you thought about the Twilight series or how juvenile you perceive Hunger Games to be, you HAVE to go see it. At least the second one. We all know the fashion is stellar and both Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson have never looked better but now that the film has such a massive following, what about all of the crazy fan paraphernalia? Take a look at what Entertainment Weekly claims are ‘Catching Fire’: The 10 worst ‘Hunger Games’ products on the market.  The two below are my favorite

TECHNOLOGY

Whoa, lots happening in the auto industry this past week. Ford unveiled its new sixth-generation Mustang and Thailand hosted its 30th International Expo. Why should you care?  According to Gizmag, ‘Last year Thailand produced 2.45 million cars, (up 68 percent on 2011), sold 1.43 million locally (up 80 percent), and moved into the top 10 auto producing countries in the world.’ Watch out China! And by the way, if anyone is wondering what might want for Christmas, I’ll take this one…

SOCIAL GOOD

I’m pretty sure that I’ve referenced this periodical before and stated my admiration for it but just in case, let me just say @RYOT is AWESOME. That’s where I found today’s inspiring story. Since the U.S. Department of Labor released the numbers last week on job status in the U.S., it’s been everywhere. What’s great about @RYOT is that it gives you suggestions, outlets, resources, to be able to do something about an issue or predicament. This week RYOT featured an article to help those of us who are struggling with being content with our financial standing in life because of the economy, and let us know that there are ways to make it work. Check out some of the grassroots ideas here: http://www.ryot.org/getting-crushed-economy-several-creative-movements-making-easier/481701

Have a wonderful week 🙂

‘See’ you soon 😉

Sara

Thanks Sara!

One of my favorite Nelson Mandela quotes relates to my friendship with Sara, “I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.”

Everyone should be so lucky to have a friend like this.

POLITICS

This week, the President gave out the Kennedy Center Honors and so I’m merging a little politics with entertainment. President Obama gave the honor for influencing American culture this year to Billy Joel, Shirley MacLaine, and Carlos Santana to name a few.

Every year, I love seeing who gets this honor and can only hope to one day influence American culture myself!

The ceremony will air December 29th on CBS.

The Hollywood Reporter had a great write up on it here: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kennedy-center-honors-billy-joel-664057

ENTERTAINMENT

Sara and I are on the same wavelength this week with all of the holiday movies, because, I just watched one. You can thank ABC Family, the Hallmark Channel and Lifetime for providing me with Christmas movies that make me want to sit under mistletoe randomly at coffee shops because chances are good that you’ll find the love of your life this way. Maybe I’ve seen too many of these, but I can not help it. I just watched “12 Dates of Christmas” on ABC Family and all I can say is wow, that ending was just magical! (I wont spoil it in case you haven’t seen this one.) These movies are just too good to be true. I am about to watch “Holidaze” because I like the concept of the independent woman who has it all who reunites with a former beau.

Here is a sneak peek picture from ABC Family. Catch it tonight or when it’s rerun in the next few weeks.

FASHION

I noticed a name trend going on with fashion lately and am so intrigued by this. Should I buy a purse because it’s named “Rosalynn”?

This Kate Spade bag has my name on it-literally (with one extra n on it).

Have I become a sucker for fashion that has my name on it? Maybe I like this bag more because of the fact that they used this marketing ploy.

This made me think about clothing and fashion in general that uses names or initials. If your initials are MK, are you more inclined to buy a Michael Kors bag?

Maybe this is all too self-centric, but I’m curious now about why this particular bag is a “Rosalynn”.

TECHNOLOGY

Sara told me that it’s snowing in D.C. today, and since the only snow I’ve seen this year in CA has been fake confetti like, I just have to show you what The Atlantic taught me about the power of a good camera.

This is so cool.

SOCIAL GOOD

Black Friday and Cyber Monday created a lot of expected buzz with people evaluating the best deals and purchasing big sales online. This year, I noticed a lot of attention was given to #GivingTuesday on Twitter. Giving Tuesday is designed to help charities raise money online. “They have a collective goal of making the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving as big a day for philanthropy as Black Friday and Cyber Monday are for shopping.”

According to this LA Times article, some charities are saying they raised more in the 24 hours on this year’s Giving Tuesday than at any other time.
Thanks for reading this week’s East2Westrending, and have a great week!
Until next week,
Ros
